Do I need to have pelvic floor symptoms to work with you?
No. While pelvic health is a major focus at Flowing Function, you do not need to have pelvic floor symptoms to be seen here.
Kat also works with people experiencing orthopedic pain, movement limitations, sport or hobby-related concerns, and return-to-activity goals.
What happens at the first visit?
Before your first visit, you’ll receive electronic forms to complete, including your health history, symptom history, and consent for services. Kat reviews these forms ahead of time so your appointment can be spent face-to-face — talking through your concerns, assessing movement, answering questions, and beginning your care — rather than filling out paperwork.
Your first visit includes a detailed conversation about your symptoms, health history, movement goals, and what matters most to you. Kat will also complete an individualized physical assessment, which may include posture, breathing, mobility, strength, movement patterns, coordination, balance, or activity-specific movements.
You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to your symptoms and a plan for next steps. The goal is not just to give you exercises, but to help you understand your body and feel supported in the process.
Will I have to have an internal pelvic floor exam?
No. An internal pelvic floor assessment is never required.
For some people, an internal exam may provide helpful information about pelvic floor muscle coordination, strength, tension, pain, or function. However, it is always optional, discussed ahead of time, and only performed with your informed consent.
There are many ways to assess and treat pelvic floor-related concerns externally through movement, breathing, pressure management, education, and whole-body assessment. Your comfort, consent, and goals guide the session.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move. Athletic wear, leggings, shorts, or loose-fitting clothes usually work well.
For movement analysis, running, lifting, or sport-specific concerns, it can be helpful to bring the shoes, gear, or clothing you typically use for that activity.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
In Oregon you can receive Physical Therapy services via direct access without a physician’s referral.  However, a referral may be required for insurance reimbursement needs.
Do you take insurance?
Flowing Function is a cash-based physical therapy clinic and does not bill insurance directly.
Payment is due at the time of service. You may use cash, credit/debit card, FSA, or HSA funds. Flowing Function can also provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
Coverage and reimbursement vary by plan, so it is always a good idea to check with your insurance provider directly.
What is a superbill?
A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes the information your insurance company may need to process an out-of-network reimbursement claim.
Flowing Function can provide superbills upon request. Reimbursement is not guaranteed and depends on your specific insurance plan, deductible, and out-of-network benefits.
Why choose cash-based physical therapy?
Cash-based care allows for longer, individualized sessions focused on your specific needs rather than insurance limitations. This gives us more time for detailed assessment, education, hands-on care, movement analysis, exercise progressions, and collaborative problem-solving.
It also means your care is not restricted to one body part or diagnosis code. We can look at the whole picture — whether that includes pelvic floor symptoms, neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, hip pain, knee pain, foot and ankle concerns, running or lifting mechanics, or return-to-activity goals.
Treatment is designed around your body, your lifestyle, and your goals — not a checklist or a visit limit set by insurance.
Do you work with pregnant or postpartum people?
Yes! Flowing Function supports people during pregnancy and postpartum recovery with concerns such as pelvic girdle pain, back or hip pain, core and pressure management, pelvic floor symptoms, return to exercise, scar mobility, painful movement, bladder or bowel symptoms, and rebuilding strength.
Postpartum care is helpful whether you gave birth recently or years ago. It is never “too late” to better understand and support your body.
Can pelvic floor physical therapy help if I leak when I run, jump, sneeze, or lift?
Pelvic floor physical therapy can help identify factors contributing to leaking, including pelvic floor coordination, pressure management, breathing strategies, strength, mobility, movement mechanics, and activity demands.
Leaking is common, but that does not mean it is normal to happen. Treatment is individualized and focused on helping your body better handle the activities that matter to you.
Can you help with pain during intimacy or pelvic exams?
Yes. Pelvic pain with intimacy, tampon use, or pelvic exams can be related to many factors, including muscle tension, sensitivity, coordination, tissue mobility, nervous system sensitivity, previous injury, hormonal changes, or past medical experiences.
Care is always consent-based, trauma-informed, and paced according to your comfort. Treatment may include education, breathing, mobility, nervous system strategies, pelvic floor coordination, external or internal manual therapy when appropriate and consented to, and a home plan that feels manageable.
Do you only treat adults?
Flowing Function primarily works with teenagers and adults. If you are unsure whether care is appropriate for you or your child, please reach out and we can help determine the best next step.
How many visits will I need?
That depends on your symptoms, goals, history, and how your body responds to treatment. Some people need only a few visits for education, movement strategies, and a focused plan. Others benefit from ongoing care to address more complex symptoms, return to higher-level activity, or build strength and confidence over time.
At your first visit, Kat will talk with you about a plan that fits your needs, schedule, and goals.
Do I have to be active, athletic, or already exercising to come in?
Not at all. Flowing Function works with people at many different activity levels.
Your goals might be returning to running, lifting, sport, or dance — or they might be walking the dog, getting through the workday, playing with your kids, gardening, or feeling more comfortable in your body. Care is built around what matters to you.
